The Coweta County Board of Education is projecting it will have to use more than $3.4 million in reserve funds to balance next year’s budget.

The board approved a record $154 million general fund budget, despite Board Member Brian Roy’s reservations.

“I said this last year and I’ll say it again that I can’t support an unbalanced budget,” he said.

Last year, the board was in a similar position and thought it would have to use more than $3 million in reserve funds to balance the budget. But with school officials emphasizing cost-cutting measures throughout the year, the board did not have to dip into the funds.

“I hope we’re able to do that again this year,” said Roy.

Public Information Officer Dean Jackson said the board also got help last year after the tax digest grew more than the board projected.

“It’s always a guessing game and our board has traditionally been very conservative, when it comes to estimating the growth in the digest,” he added.
