Barons Ball set for Sat.Tue, 11/01/2005 - 7:05pm
By: The Citizen
It’s going to be an oinking good time this Saturday night for patrons at the 2005 Fayette County American Cancer Society’s Barons’ Ball. Attendees at the ball will have an opportunity to go to the “Bank of Bits” to make a withdrawal of one of a hundred hand decorated piggy banks. The ‘Bank of Bits’ is named in honor of Barons’ Ball sponsor Alison (Bitsy) Trimble. Trimble is an annual sponsor of the Barons’ Ball in honor of her stepfather, Jack Park, who passed away from lung cancer in the year 2000. Thanks to her sponsorship, 100 white ceramic piggy banks were distributed to local artisans for them to decorate in their own unique fashion or style. The pigs were distributed by Kimberly (Kimbo) Daniel, an artist designer and owner of Kimbo’s Frames and Things in Fayetteville. Kimbo was inspired to assist with the Barons’ Ball after the cancer death of three close friends and family members in one month. Daniel asked a wide variety of artisans to assist in decorating the all-white pigs. The artists were very creative and used several different mediums to express their artistic abilities. Pam Green of Peachtree City, whose mother-in-law died of leukemia, decorated with paint. She created “Pig Casso,” a jigsaw puzzle-inspired pig with bright enamel paint. Sandy Holcomb, a retired school teacher whose mother died of cancer and whose sister-in-law is currently battling leukemia, decorated her pig with various jewels, baubles and bows. One pig is even covered in mirrored tiles for an outstanding overall look of shine. For a donation of $25, patrons will roundup and withdraw the pig of their choice and search inside for a surprise prize. Every pig is guaranteed to contain some kind of monetary prize; anything from $1 to $100 will be included inside. But every patron and every artist knows that the real goal of the Barons’ Ball is to raise funds to assist local cancer patients and their families and to help fund cancer research and development.
