Chances are patrons of Peachtree City's golf cart paths have noticed some golf carts tootling around with the new yellow decals on them.

So far, more than 1,940 numbered decals have been issued by city staff, noted City Administrative Director Jane Miller.

Miller predicted the city will have about 8,500 golf carts registered by the time the process is completed later this year.

The initiative, which will be repeated every five years, was designed to get a better track of who owns which cart to help in investigating crimes relating golf carts. The city's current database contains much obsolete information because residents forget to change the golf cart registration when selling or purchasing a used golf cart, officials said.

Of those who have paid for the $12 decal fee so far, 841 people have paid in person at City Hall, 571 persons mailed in the fee and 528 have purchased their decals online, Miller said.

Council has pledged that if the program has any profit above the costs of mailing and handling the permits, the extra money would be earmarked for improvements to the cart path system.
