There appears to be no stopping the powerful engine of growth that has run over Coweta County in the last decade.

In the recently approved five year plan of the Coweta County School System, officials are projecting 659 students to enter the schools during each of the next five years.

“We’re basically growing at the rate of one school per year,” said public information director Dean Jackson.

This year, the school system was able to use growth rates for the last three years, instead of the last five years, which should help the school system get additional state funding.

“We’re always growing faster, so any help we can get is appreciated,” added Jackson.

The school system ended the year with 20,400 students and if the projections are true, nearly 24,000 students will be in the system in 2010.

Based on the projections, the system is anticipating building two more elementary schools in the next five years; one near Senoia and one in the northeastern part of the county.

Jackson said a new middle school is also planned, but probably won’t be built until 2011.
