More than half of Fayette’s fifth graders have demonstrated that they can write clear, well-developed narratives that engage readers, according to reports from the Spring 2006 fifth grade writing assessment.

The scores show that 45 percent of students are performing at stage 5, the “engaging writer” while 22 percent of them are at the highest stage (6), the “extending writer.”

According to scoring guidelines published by the Georgia Department of Education, students performing stage 5 have a well-developed topic with a clear beginning, middle and end. The organization of the piece sustains the writer’s purpose and engages the reader. The writer also uses varied language and sentence patterns. Stage 6 demonstrates a fully developed topic with rich details. The organization sustains the writer’s purpose and moves the reader through the piece. The writer engages and sustains the reader’s interest and demonstrates a creative and effective use of language and varied sentence patterns.

In comparison to state scores, Fayette’s students scored five percent higher in stage 5 with Georgia posting 40 percent. Students also outscored the state in stage 6 by six percent compared to Georgia’s 16 percent.
