State Sen. Ronnie Chance of Tyrone has been appointed by Gov. Sonny Perdue as his floor leader in the Senate.

This means Chance will carry Gov. Perdue’s legislation as it goes through the legislative process. Duties include monitoring bills as they progress and carrying them to passage by the entire General Assembly.

Sometimes, a floor leader will act as a liaison between the public, the Senate and the Governor’s office. They may also work directly with Perdue to draft new legislation and perfect it in the Senate.

It’s a plum political role for Chance, who obviously has impressed Senate Republican leaders as he is just completing his first term in office. Senate President Pro-Tem Eric Johnson of Savannah called Chance one of the Senate’s new “up and comers.”

“I am certain that Sen. Chance is going to serve Georgia well, as he is very knowledgeable in the areas of retirement and transportation,” Johnson said. “He brings a fresh perspective to the Senate and I look forward to working with him in this new capacity.”

Chance said he was honored by the appointment.

“I am pleased that my work in the legislature is being recognized by our governor and my colleagues in the Senate,” Chance said. “I feel that we are on the verge of entering prosperous times in our state, and I’m so grateful that Gov. Perdue has shown his faith in me with this appointment.”

Chance is a secretary of the Senate’s finance committee and he also belongs to the Senate’s higher education, economic development, reapportion/redistricting and veterans/military affairs committees.

Chance founded Chance Public Relations in 1997 and is a graduate of Fayette County High School and the Georgia State University School of Business. He and his wife, the former Cressida Stevens of Gloucestershire, England have one daughter, Ella.
