Two annexation requests totaling 8.74 acres became Union City’s first stab at increasing its size by 7,000 acres prior to the Oct. 30 state-mandated deadline.

The city council May 16 unanimously approved the annexation of two parcels near Flat Shoals Road in the Royal South Parkway area.

Both parcels were annexed using the 100 percent method since both properties abut at least 50 feet of existing city limits. Both requests were recommended by the city’s Planning Commission.

Council members needed little discussion to annex a 7.24-acre tract near the intersection of Feldwood Road and Royal South Parkway. The board also approved a request for General Commercial zoning.

The property is divided into two parcels. One of the parcels fronts I-85 and is located adjacent to the MARTA park and ride lot. The owner plans to construct hotels on a majority of the property, city staff said. Commercial development would not negatively impact nearby Banneker High School, they added.

The other request involved 1.495 acres located off Royal South Parkway. Currently vacant, the request included a General Commercial zoning designation.

The council noted that both fire and police services will be provided immediately upon the effective date of the annexations.
