An engineering firm is slated to design a new spillway for Huddleston Pond in Peachtree CIty to fix a problem that has led to the pond’s level being lowered.

The problem is a leaky rusted standpipe that allows water to leak through, draining the pond’s water elevation, said City Engineer David Borkowski. A temporary plug has been installed but a more permanent fix is needed to protect the fish currently living in the pond, Borkowski said.

The winning engineering bid was a combined effort from Schnabel Engineering and Integrated Science and Engineering. One of the engineers on the project was involved in the pond’s original design back in the ‘90s, Borkowski noted. The project was approved for up to $44,500 in funding by the City Council last week.

The funds will come from the city’s stormwater program.

Part of the project will involve the removal of trees that are located on the dam so it can meet the requirements of the state’s Safe Dams Act, Borkowski noted.

“We’ll also need to bring in some fill dirt to soften the slopes,” Borkowski said.

The current corrugated metal standpipe will be replaced with a more sturdy and durable pipe made out of either concrete or polyethylene, Borkowski added.
