Disqualified candidates refuse responsibility

The two candidates that were disqualified recently to run for Fayette County Board of Education are whining away in the newspapers. Not once did either of them take any responsibility for any of their actions in these matters.

The first one is Kay Seabolt who did not bother to even read what the requirements were before embarking on a run for office. Then when it was discovered that she is ineligible, it is someone else’s fault.

She has blamed it on the “officials” of the Republican Party and the Elections Board. The affidavit that she swore to the Republican Party stated that she was retired. The Elections Board found out she was an assistant principal at some school and ruled her ineligible to run.

Now she is piling on the story about how wrong everyone else is in this case. Too bad she is not woman enough to admit that she should have done even a little research before trying to run.

If she had she could have quit her school job and been eligible to run. But, oh no, it is someone else’s fault. I would question her ability to serve on the Board of Education if she is unable to do even the simplest research about her candidacy. What if a really complex issue came before the board? Would she have done her homework or would it again be someone else’s fault?

As for Greg Powers, he is about as arrogant a liar as I have ever heard about. He tells his neighbors he has moved months ago and abandons his old home, but tries to still use that address to run again. Several neighbors testified that the house is abandoned and the family has moved. The neighbors have tried for months to get him to attend to the property to no avail. Now he says the neighbors are lying.

Come on, why would several neighbors lie about something like that? No one showed up to say they knew he still lives there. Even his daughter would not say where she lives.

Does he think he owns that position on the board? He is bad-mouthing everyone involved. Never once did he even come close to admitting he may have done something wrong. Why would he go to such great lengths to keep his seat on the board? Very strange.

Personally, I think it is high time we elected some school board members with some sense and guts. Powers has been on the board for two terms and admitted that there were hundreds and maybe thousands of illegal students, but it was hard to do anything about it.

Why is that? Nobody even tries. With his kind of leadership, it is no wonder that our school system is rapidly going downhill.

Maybe it is not too late to turn things around. Two new school board members this year could make a difference.
