Why is the local bar association inviting incumbent state senators and representatives to lunch right before an election, while leaving out their challengers?

For the record, PTC Kiwanis did not support Harold Logsdon’s candidacy for mayor. Because Kiwanis is a 501(c)(3) entity, it cannot – and did not – champion anyone for elected office, including Mr. Logsdon. I have been accosted by people in the community who are unhappy with Mayor Logsdon’s initiatives on expanding development density in the city and beyond simply because I’m a member of Kiwanis. The criticism that he was the “Kiwanis candidate” is totally unfounded. There are many in our organization who voted for a candidate other than Mayor Logsdon. Blaming Kiwanis for local political decisions is just plain wrong.

Fayette Chairman Greg Dunn abandoned his principles when he welcomed sewer service from Peachtree City into the unincorporated county with open arms. Now Peachtree City wants to annex lots of county land and build thousands of new homes and the chairman has, once again, given them the nod. Chairman Dunn wants to be re-elected so badly he’ll go along with anything at this point. Dunn thinks that abandoning the county land use plan will keep the developer crowd off his back during the election; how depressing. Eric Maxwell is the true developers’ candidate, but it’s now hard to distinguish between the two. One gets the pro-growth, high density support while the other deserts his principles trying to appease them. Either way, Fayette County loses.

What has happened to all the landscaping maintenance, or lack thereof in Peachtree City? I don’t think I have ever seen the medians look as bad as they do now. Especially on Ga. Highway 54, between Ga. Highway 74 and Dairy Queen. They are overgrown with weeds, almost no mulch on the ground. They are looking pretty sad.

Can I urge and encourage anyone who is sick and tired of sitting in a two-mile back-up of traffic during rush hour waiting for someone to make a left turn from southbound Ga. Highway 92 and Hilo Road in Fayetteville to attend the informational meeting at the public library on May 22. Make your frustration and your voice heard and give the D.O.T. an earful. No more throwing Band-aids at the problems. Let’s get to the root cause of these traffic problems and have the D.O.T. fix them once and for all. Growth is good in any community. Uncontrolled growth is a disaster as Fayette County has all too well proven. If the Georgia D.O.T. is going to put the time and money into realigning this horrible intersection, let’s ask for dedicated left turn lanes in both directions, so all the vehicles waiting for traffic to clear so they can make left turns onto Kingswood Drive or Hilo Road don’t back up the entire highway. If they want to widen the roadway, they need to be proactive this time and do it right the first time, and that is by adding dedicated turn lanes and “go around” lanes for the rest of the traffic. I think I might actually enjoy going to work and getting home from work the same day.

Has anyone ever traced the ownership of what is now The Avenue? I know Sarah Lee Company ran a food processing plant there until it was nearly time for their employees to collect retirement and then they absconded to the Mexican border. Who bought it next, and next, and then developed it (the people not the companies) hasn’t generally been published. Such a serious mistake should be looked into to see who, if anyone, got rich on this venture, and maybe unduly influenced the development. It will be difficult to sort out names and influence, but we need to know how to avoid such a catastrophe again.

Would someone please let us know when the mud puddle formally known as Huddleston Pond is going to be repaired? Neighborhood blight starts when city government fails to maintain the common areas. This is a wealthy community; there is no reason for such a delay and such decay. Before we go off figuring out how we can bring more homes into the fold to increase our tax base, how about taking care of the commitments to those already paying taxes? Or does the location of Huddleston Pond have anything to do with it? The wonderful community that is Peachtree City was born in the area around this landmark. Just because there is sweet butter across the highway, let’s not forget the bread upon which it was spread. Molding bread will make you sick, no matter how sweet the butter on top.

Fayette County refused to allow Dell Webb Company to build senior homes behind the hospital saying that seniors weren’t their kind of people. However it seems Peachtree City thinks it is a great idea for Levitt to do the same thing north of Centennial. Who owned the property in each case?

Do our 5th graders in Fayette County schools have nothing better to do at school than carry around and care for an egg as though it were their child for a week? My child is in the 5th grade, and the following are excerpts from the instructional paper sent home with the students outlining their “project” to do during the week of May 15-19: “...we will be exploring the role of a parent through experimentation. Each child will ‘care for’ an egg as if it were his/her child. The egg may not be left home alone, must be placed in safe places, and must be given love and support. If the egg gets broken, please replace it with another egg. Do not boil the eggs! ... Your child should bring the yolkless egg in a safe and comfy container on Monday, May 15. At the end of the week, your child will write an assessment of the experiment and explain difficulties he/she had throughout the week ... we hope this will be fun and informative for both you and your child ... we hope you and your child have a great time! ... on another piece of paper (for parents) please describe your experiences this week. Include important items like circumstances around broken eggs, things your child experienced, and whether you feel this experiment helped your child or not....” Well, here is my assessment: what a bunch of nonsense. Oh, yes, this will teach our students about caring for his/her child in the future. (...”if the egg gets broken, please replace it with another egg...”) Huh? My child couldn’t even understand why the project needed to be done, he could only say it had something to do with responsibility. As he pointed out to me, “Isn’t that the job of the parents to teach responsibility? I learn that at home from you. I don’t see why I have to carry an egg around for a week.” Fayette County education administrators, please allow our teachers to spend their time teaching our children the subjects we expect them to teach. We parent our children, and we do not expect our teachers to be their parents. Give the classroom back to our teachers, and do not force them to promote silly projects and time-consuming nonsense that has no ultimate benefit to the students. We have great teachers in this county, and I am afraid we will lose them to other districts if these types of lessons and projects are required to be given out to students. Before another 5th grade class comes along in August, I really hope the administrators will look over the curriculum and make changes to eliminate the unnecessary and add back in the essential. Please bring quality back to Fayette County schools.

Unless the management of The Fred Amphitheater in Peachtree City makes a few positive changes to their operation, I’ll never attend another one of their functions. This past Saturday four of us decided to cough up $50 each to see Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. (We purposely cancelled our long-held season tickets last year). The opening act was an aging comedian who was both rude and crude. The majority of his so-called humor dealt with off-color functions of his “private parts.” Not a great start for families with young children. When Valli came on stage the background music was so loud that it was difficult to hear his vocals. Where were the sound techs? If you were unfortunate enough to sit in the upper 10 rows of the amphitheater, as we were, it was impossible to hear Valli when he spoke to the audience. Blame this on an unruly group of people standing outside the concession stands that were apparently there to drink and visit, not to watch the show. Come on, Fred management: Can’t you do something about those folks? A refund would be nice.

I was brutally assaulted in The Pavilion parking lot today. Man, those nesting birds are mean!

Could anyone please give the status to the bridge over Flat Creek and completed path from Morallion Hills to Gardener Drive? We were told by the Peachtree City planner in November 2004 that it would be done in one year. We have not seen an update on the estimated completion time. [After talking] to neighbors and friends and coworkers, we are not the only ones who want to know the status of this project. We are anxious to see it completed.

Just wanted to let the cyclist who thinks everyone who is not a fellow cyclist is somehow illiterate or a redneck because we don’t share the road the way you think we should: Too bad. How dare you insinuate that if you are not into the “sport” (one that most of us outgrew by age 12) you are an illiterate redneck on his way to McDonald’s? If you think the rest of us are all rednecks then we should start acting like rednecks and throw beer cans at you as you ride down the road, or maybe my redneck girlfriend could flick a lit cigarette at your Spandex costume when we pass you. When all us rednecks start doing these things to you snob (that means: one who has an offensive air of superiority in matters of knowledge or taste) cyclists then maybe you will stop polluting the roads of Peachtree City and Brooks every weekend like trash.

The idea of prosecuting parents who file false affidavits to enroll their children in Fayette County schools is not far-fetched. When I worked for a licensing agency in another county, we conducted at audit of permit applications and found that more than 25 percent of the applications contained false information. We added warning text to our forms, and, in extreme cases, prosecuted for false statements. It’s a felony, not a misdemeanor, and word spread quickly. I do not know if the practice still exists, but at one time the city of Decatur allowed out-of-city parents to send their kids to Decatur schools subject to empty seats within the district’s class-size limits and monthly tuition payments (a few hundred dollars per month per pupil). There usually was a waiting list. I suspect most non-Fayette parents would rather cough up some money that way, rather than paying restitution through a probation or parole officer.

OK, I think I get it. You are the assistant coach, offensive coordinator and strength coach in football for over 10 years. You are the assistant coach for a girl’s soccer team that wins consecutive state championships and goes to final championship game the next year. You are a special education teacher for over 10 years. You are very popular with students who respect you and recognize you are interested in them and how they become responsible adults. And, yet, you are not asked to stay at this same school after all this? On second thought, I do not get it at all. Very confusing. Thanks, Coach, for a job well done. You exemplify what a teacher/coach/educator should be.

It was nice to read all the awards the McIntosh baseball team received. May I nominate three more categories? Best helmet thrower, longest average time per game for beating non-stop on the dugout pole and best use of an expletive to draw attention away from your athletic ability. Next year, we fans and parents hope to see a team playing with class and sportsmanship.

Reference the article in the May 17 issue concerning the removal of Mark Rogers from a county meeting, let me see if I have things straight. Public comment during the public comment period is fine as long as it is politically correct or is what the commissioners wish to hear. Otherwise you might be forcibly removed. Is this the same country that was founded on the principle of free speech?

Since the citizens of New Orleans are stupid enough to re-elect the power-hungry, racist, inept Mayor Nagin, they deserve everything and more that has happened to their city. I for one will no longer give any of my hard-earned money to any cause even remotely connected to Hurricane Katrina. They made their choice, now let them live with it.

Stop the presses! President Bush has discovered the border! And like Stanley discovered Livingston, Like Flemming discovered penicillin, he says “Eureka! The border is not secure.” Whottaguy!

----------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How many illegals does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: 25. One to change the bulb and 24 to build the house the lamp is in.

----------------------------------------------------------------

If President Bush’s plan sounds reasonable to you, it’s because, like the “unmugged liberal,” you’re far from the rank and file trenches where most of us live, and the chaos hasn’t yet reached your neighborhood or your workplace. Example: Private schools for your children.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Thumbs up to alert and determined citizens who become informed about immigration and keep pressure on Congress. Guest-amnesty proponents have ”misunderestimated” the total population chaos they will unleash on our nation. The number of permanent immigrants allowed in 10 years under the McCain/Kennedy bill is 25 million. The 10-year number under the Hagel/Martinez “compromise” is 32 million.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Thumbs up to President Bush for his new ”laugh it off” diet method. I’ve surely lost 10 pounds just since he made his speech. “Temporary” guest worker program: ha ha ha! “6000 National Guard to the border, till (heeeheehaw) the Border Patrol force can secure our borders.” Ho ho ho, oh, stop, you’re killing me!

----------------------------------------------------------------

In my dreams I heard a true leader say: “Today I have issued an Executive Order requiring the SS Agency and IRS to share their data base with immigration authorities to track illegal workers and their equally illegal employers.” “Today I have asked Congress to make the Employment Verification Program mandatory for all employers. No more voluntary obedience to our immigration employment laws.” Then I woke up and heard more stale promises all dressed up in secondhand clothes. Now, I’m awake, mad, and sending my Citizen’s Order to Congress: “Enforce present laws before you pass new ones.”

Barry Bonds may hit more home runs than Babe Ruth but the Babe did it the old fashioned way. He earned them fair and square. No matter how many homers Barry hits, his accomplishment will always be bogus.

Our own BellSouth is implicated with the feds to give certain information to the feds. We don’t know yet whether it is everything or that they can get everything if they wish. If it doesn’t have our conversation then it can’t be very critical to them. And, say a number turns out to be critical: they will then listen, no? It is the way the Nazis started. Also, now the National Guard to the border. Just think, soldiers at our border. Remember the old Nazi newsreels? Show us your papers! Next, regular soldiers there. Now consider the local setup in Fayette County with the sheriff and the county officials. That also is about power, and nothing else. The sheriff thing is obsolete. Wyatt Earp no longer exists.
