Residents driving the busy Rockaway Road corridor may soon see Senoia’s first example of yard art.

Kevin Wright, who lives at 516 Rockaway Road, asked the City Council Monday night to allow him to place a brass statue in his front yard. City Administrator Richard Ferry said Wright runs his engineering business out of his home and originally wanted to place a sign that would enable customers to find his business.

But the city’s sign ordinance only allows a 4 sq.ft sign in a residential area and it has to be affixed to the home.

“He lives about 200 ft. off Rockaway, so that small a sign wouldn’t do him any good,” Ferry said.

Instead, Wright said he would build a statue that is the trademark of his company.

During the City Council discussion, Wright was asked if the logo would be placed on the statue and he responded no. The City Council agreed it probably did not need to get in the business of regulating “yard art” and just reminded Wright the statue could not be placed in the right of way.

In other business, the City Council approved a memorandum of understanding for a $250,000 streetscape grant from the DOT to improve the city’s downtown.

Ferry said the city is required to provide 20 percent in matching funds and said the grant would help patch sidewalks and improve intersections.
