The water quality at Line Creek has been back to normal for a week now, according to results from water quality testing conducted by the Peachtree City Water and Sewer Authority.

The water was contaminated with an estimated 250,000 gallons of untreated sewage May 6 when a plant operator at the Rockaway plant failed to act on an alarm that indicated a malfunction in the sewage treatment plant. That employee was later fired, officials said.

The spill did not result in a fish kill or the apparent loss of any other aquatic life, said Larry Turner, general manager of WASA. Tests on the dissolved oxygen levels and fecal coliform levels also indicated the creek’s water quality was back to normal, he added.

Because of the spill, the authority will be required to test Line Creek’s water quality on a more frequent basis, starting with daily tests that revert later to weekly tests and then monthly tests, Turner noted.

Also, the authority will await any further action from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, which is expected to levy a fine.

The Rockaway Wastewater Treatment Plant treats approximately 1.5 million gallons of sewage a day.
