A greater percentage of Coweta County 11th graders passed science and social studies sections of the Georgia High School Graduation (GHSGT) on the first sitting, according to results returned to the school system this week.

93 percent of students taking the test passed the social studies section on their first sitting, compared to 92 percent last year, and 80 percent passed the science section, compared to 76 percent last year. First-time passage rates for English and language arts stayed the same at 99 percent, and first-time passage rates for math dropped by one point, from 93 percent to 92 percent.

Student averages overall in Coweta County and by high school are also higher than state averages in English, math, science and social studies, according to scores reported by the state Department of Education on Monday.

The Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) and the Georgia High School Writing Test (GHSWT) are tests that must be passed in order for student to earn a regular high school diploma. These tests are given to students beginning in their 11th grade year and may be taken several times until the student passes all sections. The GHSGT has tests in the areas of mathematics, science, social studies, and English.

The GHSWT requires the student to write an essay on a topic included with the test. That test was taken last fall and reported earlier. 96 percent of Coweta County 11th graders passed the writing test on the first sitting, representing a county-wide increase of four percentage points over the last two years.
