Forget the calculator and call one of the Fayette’s math bowl winners for the solution to those difficult math problems.

Fourth and fifth grade teams from Fayette’s 17 elementary schools competed in the sixth annual Fayette County Math Bowl May 1-2 at the LaFayette Educational Center. Teams of three students per school put their math knowledge to the test as they solved 15 timed problems that required them to use logic, algebra, multiplication, addition and subtraction to find the answers.

The fourth grade teams fought hard to earn a placement as one of the top three winners by going through 15 tiebreakers before winning teams were finally decided.

“These students have worked very hard here today. I think they deserve a math homework pass for being so smart,” Angie Meredith, moderator and instructional math teacher, told parents and teachers in attendance.

Peeples Elementary placed first in the fourth grade competition. Team members include Brooke Beatty, Nick Brown, Austin Palmer and Ali Grill as the alternate. Crabapple Lane took second followed by Peachtree City in third.

In the fifth grade competition, Braelinn Elementary won first place honors. Chris Pham, Alex Razin, Angelique Soulakos and alternate Laura Lien helped the school clinch the championship. Tyrone came in second followed by Fayetteville Intermediate in third place.

“All of these students are already winners representing their schools and should be very proud of their accomplishments. We are very proud of them,” said Lynn Ridgeway, math coordinator.

Students earned the right to participate in the county math bowl by being the top scorers at their individual school competitions earlier this year. Each student received a certificate of participation. First, second and third place teams received trophies to take back to their school as well as will have their names engraved on the plaque of champions that is displayed in the math coordinator’s office at the LaFayette Educational Center.

Winning teams also received “Math at Hand” and “Math on Call” books to help them prepare for the next grade level of math. Diane Gramigna of Great Source donated both the books and the trophies.
