The Sandy Creek Winterguard made history by becoming the first team to medal four years in a row at the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit (SCGC) Championships.

This year the team placed third in the Scholastic A-Chapter V Division and received bronze medals. While Winterguards at Whitewater, Fayette County and Starr’s Mill High also performed at the competition, Sandy Creek was the only Fayette team to medal and the first one to earn medals four years in a row in the Southeastern Colorguard Circuit. The team competed against others from Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama.

In addition to the team’s accomplishment, Sandy Creek senior Megan Held, a four-year, eight-season veteran of the Winter/Color guard, was awarded a SCGC scholarship. Megan plans to attend the University of West Georgia and major in public relations and graphic design while continuing with the university’s Colorguard and Winterguard.

Winterguard is a sport that was started in the 1970s as a continuation of the Colorguard program in high schools and colleges. It involves groups of individuals who incorporate dance and gymnastics with the traditional guard elements of flags, rifles and sabers. Instead of performing with the marching band, like Colorguard, Winterguard is performed to pre-recorded music inside a gymnasium or arena. The Winterguard competition season begins in January and ends in late March-early April.
