Four projects developed by Fayette high school students have received first place recognition at the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair held recently at the University of Georgia.

The students earning first place honors for their work are Elliot Charobee and Eric Nash, and Erika Martinez-Uribe and Liliana Urrego, all from Fayette County High, Emma Kearney and Will Kearney, both from McIntosh High and Sam Killebrew of Whitewater High.

In addition to their first place wins, Emma and Will Kearney won the Senior Grand Award, which allows students to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair as observers. Emma and Will were the only ninth graders who received a Grand Award in the senior division and will join one other ninth grader as an observer. The two students also received the National Youth Science Foundation Alternate Award.

Additionally, Charobee and Nash were given the UGA Physics and Astronomy Department Award and Martinez-Uribe and Urrego received the SAPPs Award for Excellence in Botany. Killebrew’s project received the “best engineering project” award as well as special recognition from the U.S. Army/U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine and U.S. Air Force.
