Dorothy Haines Cavan

Dorothy “Dot” Haines Cavan, 89, Thomaston, died May 8, 2006. She was born March 21, 1917 in Richmond County to the late George and Effie Reynolds Haines. She entered the University of Georgia at the age of 16, where she majored in Latin with a minor in French and zoology. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Chi Omega sororities. She was graduated with a B. A. degree. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Cavan whom she met at UGA. They were married for 44 years until his death in 1983. She taught Latin at R. E. Lee Institute for several years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Thomaston, where she taught the Alec Teal Sunday School Class. Graveside services were at Westover Memorial Park, Augusta, with Mike Cavan officiating. Survivors include sons Mike and Becky Cavan, Athens, Jimmy and Ann Cavan, Kemp, Texas, and Pete and Debbie Cavan, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; daughters, Dr. Joannie Cavan, Peachtree City, and Dottie and Lew Akins, Fernandina Beach, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Coggins Funeral Home, Thomaston, was in charge.
