Tyrone officials are still awaiting word from the Fayette County Board of Commissioners about the town’s request for recreation funding from the county.

The town is seeking financial assistance from the county to offset the recreation funds spent servicing county residents through the town’s recreation programs, Town Manager Barry Amos said.

Tyrone has asked for help with funding several projects at the Handley Park recreation complex. Those projects include: construction of a restroom/concession stand building for $60,000; construction of two additional soccer fields at Handley Park for $20,000 each (total $40,000); adding lights to two soccer fields at $50,000 each and adding lights to the pre-T-ball field for $30,000.

At the county’s budget meeting Monday, Commission Chairman Greg Dunn told Amos that Tyrone would get some funding from the county. Commissioner Linda Wells said Thursday that she was close to coming up with a figure for Tyrone, but the county took no action to include such funds in its upcoming budget, which was presented to the public for the first time Thursday evening.

Town Council members Grace Caldwell and Gloria Furr were also at the county’s Thursday budget meeting but neither discussed the town’s request during the meeting.

The county pays Peachtree City $150,000 a year in a similar arrangement to compensate it for providing recreation for residents in the unincorporated county.

Since 2000, Tyrone has spent just over $1 million on recreation, Amos said.
