Master Gardener Tour

For the first time ever, the Fayette County Master Gardeners are sponsoring a Garden Tour in north Peachtree City on Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Eight gardens will be featured on the tour, each possessing its own unique features. Only two of the gardens on the tour are owned by Fayette County Master Gardeners.

Garden #1 is extensively landscaped and features four waterfalls and two Koi ponds surrounded by over 12,000 exotic bushes, shrubs, trees and ornamental grasses. Walking trails and park benches can be found throughout the garden, making it a peaceful and beautiful place to be.

The second stop on the tour features unusual and rare plants displayed throughout this almost 3-acre garden. Conifer and Japanese Maples dominate the landscape, set among other more traditional southern specimens. Two ponds and a creek compliment the natural tranquility of this garden.

Garden #3 also includes a pond and waterfall inside the tranquil location. The garden contains many shade plants, such as azaleas, hydrangeas, hostas and ferns throughout.

Garden #4 is a a formal Boxwood garden, installed November 2003. Overlooking Lake Kedron, this location has a new perennial garden with the most beloved flowers of past and present: black-eyed Susans, daisies, daylilies, iris, peonies, hostas and roses.

The fifth location on the tour is a lakeside retreat. By no means a formal garden, it is designed to combine contrasting colors and textures. A waterfall cascades down a stacked rock wall, over the stream bed, to the bridge-covered gold fish pond below. It is a thoughtful balance of hardscape and plantings with Lake Kedron as the backdrop for this eclectic garden.

Garden #6 is a cottage garden, designed with birds, hummingbirds and butterflies in mind. Extensive landscaping provides shelter, food and water for the birds, and it is a very pleasant retreat for the owners and visitors as well.

Garden #7 is the home of South Metro Rose Society President Cindy Dale. Winding paths lead visitors past 184 bushes of fragrant Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, Floribundas, Climbers, Antiques, Shrub Roses, and Miniature Roses accented with fountains and a garden statuary. Previous visitors will find new things to see this year in the recently completed landscape renovation.

The final stop on the tour is a mixture of plants from a variety of locations. Intended as a place for relaxation, plants were selected for their beauty.

Tickets are $15 each and are available in Peachtree City at Pike Family Nurseries on Hwy. 74 and Wild Birds Unlimited, 100 N. Peachtree Parkway. In Fayetteville, they can be purchased at the Fayette County Extension Office, 140 Stonewall Avenue, Suite 209. Andy’s Nursery and Landscape will also have tickets for sale in Fayetteville and Newnan. The tour will occur rain or shine.

Ticket holders will be able to register to win a $ 20 gift certificate from Pike Family Nurseries, Wild Birds Unlimited or Andy’s Nursery and Landscape at one of the gardens. The drawing will be held on May 16.

Proceeds from the garden tour will go toward the Master Gardener’s green house project.
