The first garden blogSorry this is a little late, but planting the flowers got rained out on Sunday morning and things began to pile on top of each other. Anyway, Sunday morning, during torrential rains, we had a family excursion to Lowe's to start pricing my fencing project and to begin to consider alternatives - mainly planting bushes or shrubs. The cost of the materials for the fence would be roughly $100. The cost of the vines to grow up and over the fence would be another $30-$50. The problem we are running into though is that the area where the fence will go is almost entirely in the shade. A lot of the vines we looked at said they needed full to partial sun and we are not sure that there is enough sun in the area. This would make sustaining bushes, shurbs or trees difficult as well. It was a little disappointing. So, we brightened the cloudy day with flowers. One basket of bright pink flowers to hang by the front door and some pretty yellow and white gerber daisies to sit in the windowbox type things on our stoop. In addition we picked up some purple heather to fill out the window boxes. They have been well-watered since we brought them home and I plan on planting them in the box tonight. Next up, most likely on Thursday night, is spraying the lawn for weeds. This Sunday, we'll walk the backyard, especially the area where I want the fence, and hopefully we'll reach a final decision. login to post comments | Michael Boylan's blog |
