A Fayetteville soldier was injured by a gunshot to his neck while serving in Iraq sometime late Saturday or early Sunday.

Sgt. Ryan Coffield has been upgraded from gravely ill to seriously ill condition, and he is able to fully move his legs and partially move his arms, according to his sister Amanda Coffield. His spine was partially injured during the incident, but there have been few details of how he was shot, his sister said Doctors expect Coffield to make a full recovery, she said.

Although he cannot talk because of a medical treatment, he is conscious and alert, communicating with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down sign, Amanda Coffield said.

Coffield graduated from Fayette County High School in 2002. His wife Sandra lives in Fayetteville and they are expecting their first child, a boy, in December, Amanda Coffield said.
