The state soccer playoffs began for the varsity boys teams on Wednesday night and the results were good for some and devastating for others. On the winning side were Starr’s Mill, McIntosh and Whitewater, while East Coweta, Fayette County and Northgate lost. The East Coweta girls also opened the state playoffs on Wednesday and won.

Starr’s Mill (14-3) hosted Groves and won 8-0. Five goals were scored by Chris Capati, while Shane Moroney, Mike Martin and Chris Metzger also had goals. The win sets up a match at home against Lowndes on Tuesday. Lowndes (11-8) advanced to the second round by defeating Morrow 7-0. They have scored 48 goals this year, allowed 34 and have a 2-1 record in games that have gone to overtime.

McIntosh (13-4-1) took on Upson Lee for the second time this year and improved on their initial 3-0 win by beating the Knights 5-0. The Chiefs got doubly good news when Lakeside-Evans (9-10) upset Ware County 3-2. Lakeside-Evans is a four seed and the Chiefs are a three seed, meaning that as the higher seed they get to host the second round game. The win for Lakeside-Evans snapped a three game losing streak. In their three games this season against ranked opponents this season, the Panthers haven’t won a game and have been out scored 8-2. They have scored a total of 35 goals this year and have allowed 33.

Whitewater (14-4) got a goal from Brian Forero late in the first half and that held up for a 1-0 win over Warner Robins. The win puts the Wildcats in the second round. They will host Thomas County Central (11-7-1) on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets defeated 10th ranked Statesboro 3-2 to advance to the second round and are currently enjoying a four game winning streak. Six of their 11 wins have come against teams with winning records this season.

The East Coweta Lady Indians (16-3) faced Glynn Academy and won 2-1. They will play the winner of the Houston County and Tri-Cities game, which was played last night after the paper went to press, next week.

Fayette County (13-5-1) fell to Camden County 1-0 in overtime, while East Coweta’s boys (8-9-2) lost to Glynn Academy 5-1 and the Northgate boys (5-12-2) lost to Eagle’s Landing 5-1.
