Last year, the city of Senoia purchased 47 acres off Pylant Street for use as the city’s biggest park. A year later, city officials are now trying to deal with what to do about the breached dam on the site and how the park should be developed.

During the April 17 City Council meeting, city administrator Richard Ferry said the city had two years to restore the dam to its previous condition after the breach occurred. The dam was breached during heavy storms last summer, so the city has just over a year to make a decision. Officials agree the dam has to be stabilized in the short term, but a new option was placed on the table during the meeting.

Ferry said the Pylant Street roadbed could be used as a possible dam site, but that would require closing Pylant and realigning it at a 90 degree angle to Ga. Highway 16. The city currently own the five acre tract between Hwy.16 and Pylant and also plans to use that as a park. City Councilman Bill Wood said realigning the road would offer a connectivity between the two parks.

The City Council also agreed that the entire park site should be master planned, so officials could better decide the design of the park. The park will be a passive park, but contain walking trails and a possible multi-use path that would exit on Howard Road near the city’s ballfields.

Mayor Robert Belisle said the city needed to go ahead and get a topographic report on the park and seek city engineer Ben Turnipseed’s opinion on realigning Pylant Street and using the roadbed as a possible dam.
