Starr's Mill teams and Lady chiefs win region tennis titlesThu, 04/27/2006 - 2:55pm

After a long day of tennis at Woodward the McIntosh girl’s team beat Chapel Hill and Woodward to become the 4AAAA regional champs for the 12th year in a row. The girl’s team of Mary Beth Black, Kendall Wilde and Stephanie Daughenbaugh played singles and Lydsi Tufte and Jessica Piester, Emma Fisher and Keegan Vining were the doubles pairings. The McIntosh Boys also had a successful day and were regional runners up. A strong performance against Chapel Hill put them in the finals and a tough match up with Woodward gave them the runner-up trophy. The boy’s team was made up of singles players Austin Tilton, Joe Styga (captain) and John Higgins. Doubles players Davy Widtfeldt and Jonathon Emmet, Matt Thompson and Kent Dunson. Both teams move onto sectional play beginning Friday, Apr. 28. In region 4-AAAAA, Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls won region titles for the second straight year. It was the first time that both teams won back to back titles. The boys defeated Union Grove 5-0 with Derrick Davison, Alex Seath and Willy Hughes winning singles matches and the teams of Jordan Bailey and Ignacion Donnett and Keith Kowal and Stefan Maher won doubles matches. The girls had a much tougher time, outlasting Newnan 3-2. Caroline Smith was the lone singles winner for the Lady Panthers, but the doubles teams of Adriana Acuna and Jenna MacPherson and Lindsay Dillon and Faith Hall secured the win and the title. Fayette County’s boys were eliminated early in the tournament, while the girls made the state playoffs as the fourth seed. The boys lost to Newnan 3-2 with wins going to number one singles Shameer Khaliqdina and number three singles Josh Williams. The girls defeated Lovejoy 3-1 to make one of the four spots going to the state tournament. They faced Newnan on Thursday and lost, putting the Lady Cougars in the finals. login to post comments |
