National character: George Washington got it rightTue, 04/25/2006 - 4:13pm

Here is a statement by George Washington that should be sent to every elected official in city, county, state and national government. These officials should read it every morning before the day’s task of governance is begun. “We are either a united people, or we are not. If the former, let us, in all matters of general concern, act as a nation, which have national objects to promote, and a national character to support. If we are not, let us no longer act a farce by pretending to it.” George Washington included this in a letter to James Madison in 1785 and it certainly seems just as apropos today as it was in 1785.
