Sandy Creek High senior Melanie Long is one of 1,000 outstanding high school seniors who will receive corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards financed by some 300 companies, foundations and other business organizations.

Long received the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation Merit Scholarship and plans to use the award to pursue a career in medicine. Melanie has been accepted to both Harvard and Duke Universities. She has chosen to attend Harvard in the fall.

Merit Scholarship winners are selected based on SAT scores and an essay outlining their activities, interests and goals. The winners are judged to have the strongest combination of academic skills and achievements, extracurricular accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
