Aria J. Reid of Fayetteville, Melanie E. Long of Tyrone and Alecia D. Jefferson of Union City are among 800 high school seniors who have won Achievement Scholarship awards through the National Achievement® Scholarship Program. The National Achievement Program, a privately financed, academic competition, was established in 1964 specifically to honor scholastically talented black American youth and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual competition. All finalists in the 2006 competition were considered for the single-payment National Achievement $2,500 scholarships which were awarded on a regional representation basis. Recipients of corporate-sponsored awards were chosen from among finalists who meet criteria set by their grantor organizations, such as residents of an area served by the sponsor. Reid, whose probable career field is public health/pharmacy, received a National Achievement $2,500 scholarship. This award is supported by NMSC, which conducts the National Achievement Scholarship Program. Reid is a student at Fayette County High in Fayetteville. Long, a student at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, was awarded an Honorary Achievement Scholarship. An Honorary Achievement Scholarship award signifies that the scholar’s educational plans or other awards preclude receipt of a monetary scholarship. The student’s name is included in the public announcement in recognition of outstanding performance in the competition. Jefferson has also been awarded a National Achievement $2,500 scholarship.
