McIntosh boys lacrosse wins fourth in a row, girls beat Columbus

Following a victory against Pope (12-3) last week, the McIntosh boys lacrosse team recorded two strong road victories against Sprayberry (18-5) and Kell (11-9). The two key wins spoiled both high school’s Senior Recognition games. The streak takes the Chiefs to 17th in the State rankings from laxpower.com.

Last Friday night the young squad faced a very physical Sprayberry team in a very vocal stadium. After a slow start in the first quarter, Sean Griffin (4 goals, 5 assists) and DJ Ward (5 goals, 3 assists) led an offensive clinic, showcasing ball movement while taking significant hits as they continued to score. Other goal scorers included Patrick Schneider, Garrett Lee, Brian Huefner, Dan Christ, and freshman Andrew Huffman who finished with three goals. Goalie David Gottardi defensively supported by Cameron Reno, David Bexley, Nathan DeRosa, Zane McCarthy, and Bradley Harris held the home team to three goals in the second half and shut out Sprayberry totally in the fourth period.

On Monday night the team traveled to Kell High school and faced an experienced group of seniors in an exciting game. McIntosh started the game by giving up two goals in the first two minutes, then regained their composure on the way to what appeared to be a comfortable 7-4 lead at halftime. Kell rebounded and battled to tie the game at nine goals apiece with just three minutes remaining, and brought the enthusiastic crowd back into the game. McIntosh gained possession and Schneider scored a key goal off an assist from Griffin to regain the lead with two minutes left in the game. Ward (5 goals) quickly scored soon afterwards to seal the victory for the improving Chiefs. Lee, Huefner, and attackman Carl Schneider were all key scorers for McIntosh as the young squad continued to impress and win on the road.
The team hopes to defeat Starr’s Mill for the second time in a rematch of a great game earlier this month. The rivals will square off this Friday night against at 7 p.m. The game will be held in Brooks Field (held behind the Fire Station).

On Apr. 12, the McIntosh Lady Chiefs lacrosse team travelled to Columbus to take on the Blue Devils. In a seesaw battle of two evenly matched opponents, the Lady Chiefs held on for a thrilling 9-8 victory.

Helped by a stalwart defense led by senior Laurel Briglevich and junior Kristin Lein that limited Columbus to 14 shots, junior Lauren Schindler had a standout performance in goal, stopping eight Blue Devil shots.

After missing several games, McIntosh was thrilled to have their leading playmaker back, senior Dani Maskery. Maskery led the offensive onslaught with four goals and one assist, adding to her team leading 25 points. She also had the game winning goal against Columbus High School. Junior Brit LaPalm, a powerhouse for the team, scored two goals and added two assists. Goals were also scored by sophomores Kelly Polo and Taylor Lugash, with assists turned in by Lein and sophomore Cailyn Worley.

Agressive defensive play from sophomores Maegan Harrison, Christen Downing, and Abby Biles kept the Blue Devils in check all game. Coached by Mike Roache and Betty Franke, the Lady Chiefs are a young team with great potential for the future.
