Fayette County (2-7) @ Starr’s Mill (7-2) Fayette County heads into this game coming off of a bye week and that always helps a team nurse some of their nagging injuries that players pick up over the course of a season. it also gives them one extra week to prepare for their opponent, although Fayette County has to be familiar with Starr’s Mill, their cross county rival by now. The Tigers have had an up and down season and injuries have played a part of that but they can let the previous game go tonight and just focus on playing their best game of the season. Starr’s Mill hopes to play their best game of the season as well because a region title is on the line in this one. The Panthers (4-1 in the region) are undefeated at home this season and a win would give them the region crown. The Panthers handled Newnan last week, limiting the Cougars to two touchdowns, while having their own offensive stars all get invovled in the game. A complete game tonight will earn Starr’s Mill a region champioship and a one seed entering the state playoffs next week. East Coweta (6-3) @ Newnan (3-6) The Indians have won three games in a row and are tied for the top spot in the region with Starr’s Mill. A win coupled with a Panther loss to Fayette County would give the Indians the region championship, not bad for a team that lost two of their first three games. In their last three games, all region games, East Coweta has out scored their opponents 105-52. If the defense can remain stingy against Newnan’s solid offense and the offense can continue to put up a lot of points, the Indians should be able to defeat their county rivals. Sandy Creek (7-2) vs. Creekside (9-0) The region championship isn’t on the line, Creekside has already wrapped it up, but there is the matter of pride and the matter of trying to start a new home winning streak for the Patriots. Sandy Creek picked up a 41-12 win over Alexander last week and looked real good doing it. The offense was balanced and effective and the defense looked like its old self, keeping Alexander off the board for stretches at a time and forcing turnovers for the offense to capitalize on. The question is, can they do it against a team like Creekside? The Seminoles have pitched three shutouts this year and have held their opponents below 10 points seven times. Their offense, which put up 216 points before October, has only scored 44 points since. This game is shaping up to be a defensive battle, unlike last year’s epic region championship game, which was an all out shootout. McIntosh (3-6) @ Chapel Hill (4-5) Last year, Chapel Hill defeated McIntosh 33-0 in the final game of the season to get their first win of the year. The loss spoiled the Chiefs chances of going .500. The Chiefs would like revenge, keeping th Panthers from a .500 season, but they would also like to finish on a positive note. That would mean eliminating the mistakes that have proved themselves to be very costly, getting their offense going and keeping it going late and having one last great showing from their defense this year. Chapel Hill ended a three game losing streak last week with a 27-17 win over Northgate but the Panthers have had an uneven season. In the first six weeks of the season, they would win one game and lose the next. They then hit a stretch where they fell to Woodward Academy, Haralson County and Creekside. The Panthers have some speedy runners and their defense is decent but McIntosh can win if they can play that elusive perfect game. Landmark Christian (6-3) @ Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (7-2) This game will decide the region championship and the War Eagles would love to win their fourth consecutive title. The Chargers will present a challenge though. While Landmark has won two in a row, since dropping three out of four straight games, Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy has won six of their last seven games and has posted four straight shutouts, three of which came against region foes. These two teams appear to be very evenly matched and the team that wants this one more is likely to be the winner. Our Lady of Mercy (0-9) @ Mt. Zion, Carroll (4-5) Even with a win, the Bobcats will likely not make the playoffs. They would have a 1-3 record and would be tied with Mt. Zion, Carroll and Whitefield Academy. The three teams would have beaten each other but both Whitfield and Mt. Zion have better overall records. The playoffs aren’t the goal though, a win is. Our Lady of Mercy has had a season beleagured by injuries and costly errors and a win to end the season would feel quite nice. The Eagles of Mt. Zion, Carroll had a stretch where they won four of five games before falling to Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy 27-0 last week. In their four wins, the Eagles have out scored their opponents 143-79, so their offense will pose some challenges for the Bobcat defense. The Bobcats are another example of a team playing with nothing to lose and that makes them very dangerous. login to post comments |
