The McIntosh and Whitewater varsity boys and girls soccer teams began the region playoffs on Monday evening, knowing that with a win, they would make the Class AAAA state tournament.

Mission accomplished.

Whitewater’s girls faced Alexander on the road and won 5-1. Scorers for the Lady Wildcats were Kayla Emerson with a hat trick and Brittany Vining and Bailey Powell each with one goal a piece. Coach Heather Allen felt that Caitlin Beale and Feagan Hunt both played great defense and goalkeepers Lisa Wilson and Ali Young made some great saves.

The girls will now play at Woodward Academy today at 6 p.m. and the winner will play on Friday for the region championship.
Whitewater’s boys faced Douglas County at home and won 2-0. They will host Northgate today at 7 p.m. and a win will put them in the finals on Friday.

McIntosh’s boys took on Lithia Springs and after a slow start put up a lot of goals, winning 8-0. The Chiefs got four goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half and then added four more in the second half. The team got outstanding play from Michael Mateos, Andy Summerville, Derek Farnsworth, Hughston Taylor, Jordan Baker and Cameron Black among others. The win sets up a rematch of last year’s AAAA state championship game between the Chiefs and the Woodward Academy War Eagles. The game will be played tonight.

The McIntosh Lady Chiefs faced Douglas County and won 15-0. Goal scorers for McIntosh were Jessalyn Moore, Brittany Schneider, Kelsey Quinn, Allison Fratto, Meghan O’Rourke and Amanda Cisko. McIntosh will play at Chapel Hill tonight at 6 p.m. for a chance to play for a region title.

In 4-AAAAA, Fayette County’s boys and girls hopes for region titles were dealt blows on Friday night with losses to East Coweta. The Lady Tigers lost 1-0. East Coweta scored late in the first half and Fayette County dominated the play for much of the second half but couldn’t find the back of the net.

On the boy’s side, Fayette’s Jonathan Collier scored the first goal but the Indians answered back before half time and then kept the game deadlocked through regulation and overtime. They won the game 4-3 in penalty kicks.

Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls faced Salem on Monday and picked up wins. The boys (12-3) won 8-1, while the girls won 2-0. Scoring goals for the boys were Riley Phelps with three, Gray Phelps with two and Jesy Phelps, Brandon McMillan and Chris Pecca each with one. Goal scorers for the Lady Panthers (11-2-1) were Katie Jacobsen and Emily Stevens, while Kelsey MacGinnis and Emily Williams recorded assists. Katelynn Morgan and Allie Matulia split duties in the goal and preserved the shutout. Morgan made three saves, while Matulia made four.

Starr’s Mill will host Fayette County on Thursday. The Starr’s Mill boys have already secured the region title because even if Newnan wins out and Fayette County beats Starr’s Mill, the Panthers win the tie-breaker having defeated Newnan head to head. Things get a little stickier with the girls. If the Lady Panthers win, they win the region, but should they lose, there would be a three way tie for first between them, East Coweta and Fayette County.

Sandy Creek’s girls faced Creekside last night and will host Lithia Springs tonight at 5:30 p.m. The Patriot boys also took on Creekside last night and will host Villa Rica tonight at 7:30 p.m.
