Georgia State Parks expand Fido-friendly policy: More cottages to allow dogs

After a successful year of testing its new dog-friendly policy, Georgia’s State Park System is expanding the number of cottages that will accommodate man’s best friend.

Beginning in May, all 30 state parks that have rental cottages will designate at least one of them as “fido friendly.” Visitors with four-legged friends will be able to enjoy all the comforts of a fully equipped cottage without the inconvenience and cost of boarding. Previously, dogs had been allowed only in state park campgrounds.

“During our pilot test at just three state parks, we found that the dog-friendly cottages were often the first ones to be rented,” said State Park Director Becky Kelley, “so we decided to expand this service to meet the growing trend of traveling with pets.” According to a Travel Industry Association of America poll, more than 29 million Americans traveled with their pets during the last three years.

Visitors must request a fido-friendly cottage when making their reservation and are required to pay a $40 fee per dog, up to two, for the duration of their stay. All dogs should be house-trained, kept on a leash when not inside the cottage, and stay under owner supervision at all times while in the park. Guests are also responsible for any damage to the cottage, and all dogs must have current vaccinations and be free of fleas, ticks and mange.

Georgia has 30 state parks that offer cottages fully equipped with kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces or woodburning stoves, and beautiful surroundings. Rates range from $50 to $159 per night, and reservations are accepted 11 months in advance. To make a reservation, log onto www.GaStateParks.org or call 1-800-864-7275.

While everything else changes, Georgia State Parks remain true to nature. During 2006, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will celebrate 75 years of protecting Georgia’s natural, cultural and recreational resources for a happy and healthy Georgia.
