Panthers top Tigers, others also pick up winsThu, 04/13/2006 - 12:59pm

Most of the local baseball teams had a good week this week, picking up wins against region foes.
In Region 4-AAAAA, Starr’s Mill (18-0) traveled to Fayette County and won 13-3 in six innings. The Panthers got a run in the first when Brian Fletcher hit a double, stole third and scored on an error. In the second, Lee Jones hit a home run and Scooter Houston drove in a run with a single. The Tigers answered in the bottom of the inning when Kevin Finn hit a two run home run off of pitcher Bryan Daniels. Spencer Shelton hit an RBI double for the Panthers in the third and Fayette kept pace when Jerrell Arnold hit a solo home run. After that it was all Starr’s Mill. Jimmy Tanner and Houston each drove in two runs in the fourth, Luke Harp hit a two run home run and Joey Lewis hit a double that drove in two runs in the fifth and Harp and Andrew Robinson hit back to back home runs in the sixth to seal the win. Daniels pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on three hits and striking out nine batters. Starr’s Mill will play at Newnan tonight at 7 p.m. East Coweta (11-6) which lost to Starr’s Mill 10-1 on Monday, bounced back with an impressive 12-0 win over Union Grove on Wednesday. The Indians will host Mundy’s Mill on Friday at 6 p.m. and will host Pike County on Saturday at noon. The Panthers are first in the region at 5-0 with East Coweta second at 3-1 and Fayette in third at 2-2. In 4-AAAA action, McIntosh (7-8) faced Haralson County on Tuesday and won 9-3. Brendan Hall got the win, pitching a complete game and striking out seven batters. He gave up six hits and a walk, while only allowing one earned run. Eric Weiss hit a grand slam in the third inning for the Chiefs, while Hall had two RBIs, one coming off of a solo home run in the seventh. Others driving in runs for McIntosh were Jon Smith, Cameron Rich and Cameron Wallis. The Chiefs hosted Lithia Springs yesterday and will play at Alexander on Monday at 5:30 p.m. They will host Sandy Creek next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Whitewater (9-7) edged out Lithia Springs 16-14 for a win. Justin Carpenter hit a grand slam, while Ryan Johnson hit a three run home run in the third and Miles Head hit a three run shot in the seventh. Heine Rivera also hit a home run in the game, while Dustin Davis drove in a key run with a single. Sandy Creek (12-3) picked up an 11-0 win over Chapel Hill on Tuesday night. Tyler Betsill picked up his third win of the year and the Patriots produced 10 hits and did not make an error. It was the Patriots fourth win in a row and the team has out scored their opponents 57-5 in that span. Sandy Creek hosted Douglas County yesterday and will host Alexander today at 5:30 p.m. The Northgate Vikings (13-3) also got a shutout the other night, defeating Douglas County 15-0. The Vikings hosted Villa Rica yesterday afternoon and will play at Haralson County on Monday. Sandy Creek, Whitewater and Northgate are tied for first in the sub-region with 4-1 records. McIntosh is 1-4. In Class A action, Our Lady of Mercy (7-9) picked up a region win by beating Mt. Zion, Carroll 12-6. Doc Lee and Owen Anderson each had two hits in the win, while Jarrod Boccella pitched a complete game. Coach Lee McDermott stated that Shortstop David Bridier played an outstanding game defensively. The Bobcats played at Mt. Paran yesterday and will host St. Francis on Saturday at 1 p.m. Landmark Christian (15-2) defeated Whitefield Academy 10-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Michael Leonard and Trey Strickland each had two hits in the win. Strickland was also the winning pitcher, giving up four hits and striking out five batters. Landmark faced St. Francis yesterday and will host Mt. Paran next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Landmark is second in 5-A with a 6-2 record, while Mercy is in fifth at 4-5. login to post comments |
