Chiefs lacrosse team tops Panthers in first varsity meeting

Last Friday’s game between the McIntosh and Starr’s Mill varsity lacrosse teams may have been a sample of things to come.

The game drew hundreds of enthusiastic fans anxious to see the first ever match up of the two programs and in an exciting game, filled with more emotion than anyone might have expected, McIntosh proved to have a little more scoring power in a 17-8 victory.

The Chiefs exploded to a 7-1 first quarter lead quickly scoring two goals in the first few moments of the game. In the second quarter, Starr’s Mill stopped the bleeding but trailed 10 – 2 at half.

Following the intermission Starrs Mill came out very emotional and physical but the McIntosh Chiefs weathered the storm with both teams scoring three goals in the quarter. In the final period, McIntosh Coach Mike Muetzel saw his team regain their composure and ball control offense to finish with a 17-8 victory against their rivals from across town.

McIntosh got three goals apiece from Evan Meyers and Garret Lee, two goals apiece from DJ Ward (39 points on the year) Brian Huefner, and freshman Nicco DeRosa. Other scorers included Sean Griffin, one goal and four assists (40 points on the year), Paul Beall, Carl Schuemann, Caleb Benson, JD Krehel and Patrick Schneider who also dominated the face-offs; 13 wins and two losses on draws.

Muetzel stated that he felt that David Gottardi performed well in goal and Cam Reno led the defense with strong performances by David Bexley, DeRosa and Zane McCarthy. He added that Joe Maskery led all players in ground balls, with strong efforts turned in by Brennan Ott, and Dan Green.

McIntosh’s next contest is a home game against Pope High School on Wednesday, Apr. 12 at 6 pm at Booth Middle School.

Starr’s Mill will play at Marist at 7 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 10 and will play at Roswell at 6:30 p.m. next Friday.

The Starr’s Mill girls lacrosse team is riding a four game winning streak. They enetered the break with an 11-5 win over Greater Atlanta Christian. Sophomore Michaela Cole, freshman Marie Acalin and junior Catherine Sanders scored their first goals of the season. The other goals were scored by senior and team captain Jessica Dupuy-Sarah Risley, Alix Stanley and Sarah Jagstadt. Warding off 3 goals was goalie Olivia Cathcart, while goalie Katie Smith held the Spartans off with 10 saves.

The Lady Panthers will play at Kennesaw on Tuesday and Rockdale County on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled for 5:45 p.m.

The McIntosh Lady Chiefs will host Woodward Academy at 6 p.m. on Monday and will play at Columbus at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
