Young author’s competition finalists announced

Twelve of Fayette’s young authors have been selected as finalists for the district level of the Young Georgia Authors’ Writing Competition.

The competition, sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education, is open to all students enrolled in the state’s public schools in kindergarten-twelfth grade. In order to become a finalist for the district competition, students must earn a first place finish in their grade level in a countywide competition.

Fayette’s finalists for the 2006 writing competition are Omari Collier, kindergarten, North Fayette Elementary; Abigail Dietz, first grade, Peeples Elementary; Erin Treon, second grade, Braelinn Elementary; Mira Bookman, third grade, Oak Grove Elementary; Caitlyn Kelly, fourth grade, North Fayette Elementary; Hannah Mason, firth grade, Kedron Elementary; Grace Flanagan, sixth grade, Rising Starr Middle; Philippe Delage, seventh grade, Whitewater Middle; Timothy Morris, eighth grade, J.C. Booth Middle; Justin Sabree, tenth grade, McIntosh High; Matthew Chambers, eleventh grade, McIntosh High; and Hannah Smith, twelfth grade, McIntosh High.

Students can submit any type of original writing for the competition including short stories, poetry, essays, journals, personal narratives and reports. Pieces are judged on originality, word choice, spelling and grammar, flow, information and imagination.

District winners are automatically advanced to the state competition. State winners will be recognized at the State Board of Education’s regular meeting in September 2006.
