A suspect who fled from a traffic stop, sparking a manhunt in Fayetteville Wednesday night, had a significant amount of crystal methamphetamine with him, police said.

Stephen Lee Smith, 24, of Attleboro Drive, Jonesboro had a backpack containing 25 grams of the substance, commonly referred to as “ice.” That was enough to charge him with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, police said.

Smith refused to stop for Officer Jim McGrath, who noticed Smith’s vehicle being driven erratically, police said. Smith eventually pulled into the neighborhood on Buckeye Lane, ditching his car in the backyard of a residence.

Smith was later captured after assistance from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 tracking team and its Hawk 1 helicopter.

Smith had an outstanding arrest warrant from the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole, and he also had a suspended driver’s license, police said. He was also charged with fleeting and attempting to elude a police officer, obstruction of a police officer, driving without insurance, criminal trespassing, abandonment of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.
