The Flint River Regional Library System will likely rescind its earlier decree to opt out of a contract to provide library services to Fayette County, according to Peachtree City officials.

In a letter to county officials, FRRLS Director Walter Murphy said the FRRLS board will meet April 10 and take “appropriate action to continue working with Fayette County.”

This is significant news for Peachtree City and Tyrone, which would rather stay with FRRLS than become a part of countywide library system. In December, the FRRLS board voted to terminate the contract as of June 30.

State library officials, in a February letter to FRRLS, urged the agency to give the Fayette County library system 18 months to investigate the options of moving to a countywide service instead of being part of a regional group. It appears that will actually happen at the next FRRLS board meeting, according to Randy Gaddo, director of leisure services for Peachtree City.

Gaddo said the service from FRRLS has even improved in recent months, and the city is pleased with service overall.

County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn has questioned why the county and each individual city pay for FRRLS services. The city pays $15,000 a year.

Officials at the Georgia Public Library Services headquarters are supporting the adoption of a countywide library system for Fayette.

City officials have contended that if the city became part of a countywide system, it would have a major impact on the library’s budget and would have a negative impact on the quality of service.

Currently, the Peachtree City library is the only one open on Sundays in Fayette County.
