State transportation officials have informed a local cycling activist that a four-foot bike lane will be part of the project to widen the southern leg of Ga. Highway 74 in Fayette County to four lanes.

The bike lane will not stretch the entire length of the project, however. It will be located between Redwine Road and the realigned Rockaway Road when the project is completed, according to Carleton L. Williams.

This part of the road is a designated bicycle route called the “Little White House.”

Williams survived a previous hit-and-run crash while biking and he wants to to help make motorists aware of bicyclists’ rights. Williams thanked those who helped with this project including Fayette County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn, Fayette County Public Words DIrector Lee Hearn, Bonnie Bobbitt and Steve Shackleford.
