This Memorial Day promises to be one for the ages in Senoia.

Last week, the City Council approved a controversial proposal to fund $7,500 for a fireworks celebration during the Memorial Day weekend.

The measure passed by a 3-2 vote with Mayor Robert Belisle, Councilmen Keith Harrison and Larry Owen supporting it, while Councilmen Perry Benson and Bill Wood opposed it.

Earlier in March, Wood let it be known that city funds could be used for more productive purposes.

“I just think we could spend the $7,500 on several other things the city needs to do such as fixing the dam at the new park or transportation projects,” he said.

The display is supposed to last between 18-20 minutes and be staged at the ballfields on Howard Road. The show would consist of “higher mid-range” fireworks that would soar over the Senoia sky.

City Clerk Debbie Hogan said the funds would be taken out of reserve funds, but the city was out soliciting donations to help defray the costs. She added that City Councilman Keith Harrison had already agreed to donate $500.
