School buses pass state tests

The Coweta County School System’s transportation system received a clean bill of health, after a weeklong annual inspection by the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

State officials with the department’s Motor Courier Compliance division inspected 241 Coweta County school buses. Transportation Coordinator Judy Gresham and school bus maintenance shop foreman Keith McCullough reported that 100 percent of the buses passed the thorough inspections.

“Every one of our buses passed and received the state’s safety rating,” said Gresham. “That’s a reflection on our maintenance personnel and our drivers and what they do all year long for our students.”

Coweta County school buses transport an estimated 16,000 students over 14,200 miles of county roads daily, which is over 2.5 million miles annually over the 180-day school year taking students to and from school, not including other trips. Because of that, Coweta buses are inspected locally on a regular monthly maintenance schedule.

The DMV conducts thorough inspections of school buses each year in March. Sgt. Sylvia Rozell, of the Department of Public Safety, conducted the inspections at the school system transportation shop on Selt Road in Newnan.
