Foundation awards nearly $25,000 to teachersTue, 03/28/2006 - 5:59pm

Thanks to the generosity of businesses and individuals who supported the Fayette County Education Foundation this year, $24,849 in mini-grants will be given to Fayette’s schools for the 2006-2007 academic year. The money will go to the county’s elementary, middle and high schools to assist them in the development of unique learning programs to complement the curriculum that is already in place. Since spring 2002, the foundation has funded nearly 300 teacher minigrants totaling over $100,000. These mingrants have helped creative teachers implement innovative classroom projects and programs that otherwise would not have received funding due to budget constraints. The foundation is a cooperative effort of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the school system. This year the foundation received 112 grant applications totaling more than $45,000. Due to the foundation’s limited amount of funds compared to requests received, grants are awarded through a competitive process based on a detailed explanation of the proposed program written by the requesting teacher. Special emphasis is given to programs that enhance reading and technology although all academic areas of study are considered and do receive awards. Educators whose grant requests are selected are required to submit a written report at the end of the program describing how it enhanced classroom learning. These reports are given to the foundation’s donors so that they can see how their gift is being utilized within the school system. The foundation accepts donations throughout the year. The foundation is incorporated as a non-profit 501(C)3 Georgia Corporation so donations are tax deductible. Since the foundation has very few overhead costs, approximately 90 percent of every dollar donated directly goes toward funding teacher minigrants and scholarships for employees who are working toward earning a degree in education. Minigrants and scholarships are awarded each spring. A board of directors comprised of business leaders, community members, teachers, school board members and school system administrators oversee the operation of the foundation. Anyone who would like more information on the foundation can contact the Fayette County Board of Education, 770-460-3535, ext. 122. login to post comments |
