Tyrone is now in a rapid growth stage, and I am concerned that the character of our town may be permanently altered by this growth in a way that will negatively impact the very things that brought us, and others, to live in this wonderful town.

New development is outpacing infrastructure growth, leading to difficult problems down the road unless steps are taken now to prepare for this growth.

This has been a concern of mine for some time, even predating my appointment to the Tyrone Planning Commission three years ago.
Carefully planned controlled growth is critical to the avoidance of serious community problems. I want our town to have the solutions in place before the problems become insurmountable.

For instance, road improvements and additions are needed to keep up with our traffic growth. The Tyrone Road intersections with Senoia Road and Highway 74, as well as the Senoia Road intersection with Castlewood Road, are two examples of areas that need improvement now.

There are plans to widen Tyrone Road between Highway 74 and the railroad tracks, but only after more development occurs on this stretch of road. In my opinion, that is not soon enough.

And due to the difficulty and/or bureaucracy involved in dealing with the railroad company, there are no plans as far as I know to widen Tyrone Road across the railroad tracks. Without some new ideas, this is going to become a bottleneck of growing frustration with Tyrone drivers.

Castlewood’s access to Senoia Road is also impacting Tyrone residents. Some have requested a 3-way stop sign be erected at that intersection. While that might help those exiting off of Castlewood, it would create extra headaches for those driving on Senoia Road.

Maybe a better solution would be to widen Castlewood Road to have two exit lanes onto Senoia Road, one for left turns and one for right turns. And widening Senoia Road to have a “center” left turn lane could improve traffic flow through town.

The problem with these suggestions is that they will cost money; however, taking proactive steps now will help reduce future cost increases. The bottom line is that if we do nothing while experiencing this growth, the situation will eventually become unbearable.

With your participation and vote, we can together address these needs and keep Tyrone a comfortable, family-friendly place to live.

Thank you,
