Gym South gymnasts go to Mardi GrasTue, 03/28/2006 - 11:20am

The Gymnastics Academy of Atlanta hosted the Mardi Gras gymnastics meet recently at Life University. The Gym South girls team was represented by several levels. The youngest level, level 3, took first place with a team score of 108.85. The level 4 team finished in second place out of 9 teams with a team score of 111.025. Individually, the level 3’s took first through fifth (out of 10 places) in the 8 year old division. They were paced by Jamie DiCicco’s 35.95 All-Around score. Katie Smith was second, and had the highest score on bars with a 9.7. Hannah Willis, Sophie Westfield, and Anaia Hood finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively. In the 7 and under age group, Darby Newman took first on vault, bars, and All-Around. Leila Greiss was second on beam and fourth All-Around, and Danielle Salvanera was ninth in the All-Around. For the level 4’s in the 8 year old division, Dylan Reynolds took first on bars and floor, and narrowly missed first place in the All-Around by 0.025. Her score was 34.525. Tyler Hicks was first on vault and fourth in the All-Around. In the 9 year old age division, two Gym South girls tied for first place. Deja Carter-Jackson was first on bars and floor, while Aliyah Reeves took first on beam. They both scored a 36.8 in the All-Around. In seventh place All-Around was Hannah Hancock. Hancock also took third in beam and floor. In the 10 year old division, Ansley McDaniel was first on bars, floor, and All-Around, totaling 36.425. Sarah McCullough was third in the All-Around and first on vault with a score of 9.2. Gym South took home 11 out of a possible 15 first place awards. Competing in the Prep-Op division, a division geared toward doing optional routines, was Lena Alston. She managed two third place finishes in bars and floor. Lena was seventh in the All-Around with a score of 34.875. In Level 7, Amanda Barton was first place in the All-Around. Amanda has been battling back from injuries and sickness and this was her first full meet this year. Morgan Akins and Brittney Hodges also competed in level 7. Hodges scored a 34.825 and Akins scored a 34.4. For the Level 8 girls, Carley Powell took sixth place All-Around and fourth on bars and beam.
