Auntie Mame

“Auntie Mame,” a delightful vintage comedy first presented in New York's Broadhurst Theater in 1956, will be staged this weekend at the Charles Wadsworth Auditorium in Newnan. The Newnan Coweta Preservation Trust, in partnership with the Newnan Hospital Auxiliary, will perform the play on Saturday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 26 at 2:30 p.m.

The play, based on the novel "Auntie Mame" by Patrick Dennis, originally starred Rosalind Russell as the madcap bohemian who inherited a nephew and managed to “parent” him to adulthood in 1930's and 40's New York.

Newnan's own Ginny Lyles stars in this hilarious revival, and her husband, Dale, appears as the terribly conservative and often choleric banker, Mr. Babcock. Mary Frances and Marc Honea portray the insufferable Connecticut Upsons, and Sharpsburg vet Jenny Price is their snobbish daughter Gloria.

Greg Lee is the affable but ill-fated Beauregarde, James Emery, the oft bewildered Patrick, and Mike Forbus, Mame's unflappable pal, Lindsay Woolsey. Dr. Jeff Allen, the popular vet/thespian, doubles as hunt doctor Dr. Shurr and lecherous hack writer Brian O'Banion. A good time should be had by all.

Tickets are available at the box office for both performances. Reserved seating is $15; general admission, $10; and seniors (65+), $8.

A portion of all proceeds will be used for scholarships awarded by the Newnan Hospital Auxiliary and the Newnan Coweta Preservation Trust.
