Lady Panthers on a winning streak, Chiefs on a losing streak

The Starr’s Mill’s varsity girls lacrosse team faced area opponent Columbus last week and defeated them for the second time this season. The Lady Panthers won 10-4 getting goals from sophomore Sarah Risley (5), freshman Alix Stanley (3) and senior Jess Dupuy (2). Sophomore Lindsey Shirley and freshman Kendall Reeves joined Risley and Dupuy with assists on goals.
Dupuy and Stanley were both offensive players for the game. Stanley added four interceptions and three ground ball control assists to her three goals, while Dupuy had 16 ground ball control assists. Freshman Katie Smith was the defensive player of the game with eight saves. Junior Catherine Sanders led the team in forced turnovers with three. She also had four ground ball control assists, as did junior Chandler Davis and Reeves.

On Tuesday night, Starr’s Mill defeated Woodstock 12-7 for their third straight win. Dupuy had six goals, while Shirley scored two goals, including her first of the year. Other scorers were Sarah Jagstatd, Kellie Sligar, Risley and Stanley. Davis recorded an assist in the win. On defense, Smith split her time in goal with sophomore Olivia Cathcart. Smith recorded three saves in the first half and Cathcart recorded 17 saves in the second half.
The McIntosh boy’s varsity lacrosse battled with heart and effort but dropped two games to top 10 opponents Roswell and Alpharetta. The losses take the extremely young team’s record to 3-4 and outside the State’s top 20 programs for the first time in their two-year history.

Underclassmen Sean Griffin (29 points) and DJ Ward (30 points) continue to lead the team in scoring with recent goals added from Evan Meyers, Joe Maskery, Garrett Lee, Paul Beall, Nicco DeRosa, Carl Scheumann, Andrew Huffman and Brian Huefner.

Captain Cameron Reno has played well on the defensive end of the field supported by rapid improvement from David Bexley and goalie David Gottardi.

“These losses were really tough games,” commented Coach Muetzel. “But we are really excited about the improvement of our freshmen and sophomores. We have put them in some tough situations and they have responded beyond our expectations.”

McIntosh faces an undefeated Pace Academy this week, then faces area rivals Woodward Academy next Wednesday and Starr’s Mill next Friday. Both games will be held at Booth Middle School at 5 p.m.
