The Fayette County High School Sports Hall of Fame committee had a surprise for one of its inductees: a high school diploma.

The sixth annual Fayette County High School Athletic Hall of Fame inducted alumni sports figures Mike Gable, track, Kathy Addison Morrison, basketball, Shane Norris, soccer, Kevi Theim Schram, swimming, and Charlie Waller, football. Also recognized was former coach, Charles Winslette.

The organization also recognizes distinguished alumni. In previous years alumni with old Fayette County names such as Burch, Reeves, Trammell, Goza, Johnson, Huddleston, Walker, among others, were recipients.

This year was a double honor for Huie L. Bray. Like many other high school students in World War II, he left school and entered the military service. In Bray’s case, it was the United States Navy, where he served three years.

After World War II, the state of Georgia said that those servicemen could apply for and receive a high school diploma.

Busy with getting his construction company in business, working in the real estate field. In addition, with years of volunteering for the fire departments and the initial installation of the volunteer Emergency Medical Services, he didn’t take up the offer.

That was rectified at the Sports Hall of Fame dinner, when Fayette County High School Principal Dr. Charles Warr presented Bray with his Fayette County High School diploma.

While he was aware of being given the distinguished alumni award, the delivery of his high school diploma was a surprise.
