It wasn’t the epic battle that many fans were hoping for. Both the Starr’s Mill (7-2) and McIntosh (6-3) varsity girls soccer teams had several key players out and the fans didn’t show up in droves, as they had in the past. That being said, the game was another fierce battle between two rivals and this year there would be no tie.

Deadlocked after regulation and two five minute overtime periods, the Lady Panthers and Chiefs settled it with penalty kicks. Starr’s Mill got the win by scoring four goals to McIntosh’s three. Aubry Ireland’s goal was the deciding goal. Ireland, a senior, did not play soccer last year and Coach Greg Shifflett was glad to have her back.

“This win gets a big, old gorilla off of our backs,” said Shifflett after the win. Shifflett also gave praise to his goalkeeper, Katelynn Morgan.

Starr’s Mill’s boys (6-2), fresh off of a 11-0 win over Mundy’s Mill, fell to Harrison 2-1. Riley Phelps got the lone goal against Harrison. The McIntosh boys (5-2) hosted Lassiter after the girls game on Friday and won 1-0. Andy Summerville scored the lone goal with an assist from Bilal Duckett.

The Lady Panthers will face Woodward Academy on the road Friday at 5;30 p.m. The boys game will follow. McIntosh’s girls will play at Whitewater at 5:30 p.m. and the boys will play at 7:30 p.m.
Whitewater’s boys and girls took on Woodward Academy last Friday and both teams were shutout.

The Lady Wildcats (5-2-1) lost 2-0 and the boys (5-2) lost 1-0. Whitewater’s boys will face McMinn County, Tenn. at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The McIntosh boys will face McMinn on Saturday at 2 p.m.

There was another girls game that went to penalty kicks on Friday and the Fayette County Lady Tigers (6-4) found themselves on the winning side, 5-3, with Kiki Fornito scoring the winning goal.

The Fayette County boys (7-2-1) lost 3-2 in overtime. The boys match was a back and forth battle that saw the Cougars jump out to a 1-0 lead and the Tigers got the equalizer from a Chris Feigenbaum shot at 28:09 and then Newnan took the lead again just before halftime. The Tigers pressed the Cougars and finally evened the match with 9:42 to go on a shot from Jonathan Collier, with assists coming from Ryan Whitehead and Chris Rawson.

Fayette County will take on Lovejoy at the Lovejoy Soccer Complex at 12 and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Sandy Creek’s boys (4-6) got a 4-1 win over Dutchtown last Friday with Jerry Riet scoring two goals and Andy Riet and Harry Lee each adding one.

The Lady Patriots lost to Dutchtown 2-1. They will play at Cartersville next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., while the boys will play at Cartersville next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
