The Fayette County Board of Education is looking south for a site for the county’s newest elementary school.

Superintendent of Education John DeCotis said the system is in negotiations to purchase a 112-acre tract near the intersection of Ga. Highway 92 and Inman Road. The site would be used for an elementary school that would open in 2009.

While 112 acres is far too big for one school, DeCotis said the school system is looking at options.

“The property owner does not want to break it up, so we could possibly put a fueling station there or warehouse space,” DeCotis said.

Another option would be selling of the unused portion of the property, but the superintendent said it’s too early to tell what other options the school system would pursue.

School officials said current growth patterns call for opening two new elementary schools in 2009. The Inman Road site is not that far from the Whitewater schools complex, and would serve a rapidly-growing area of the county.

“There’s just a lot of residential growth in that area and it looks like that trend will continue. They’re going to need some relief in that area,” he added.

As far as the other site goes, DeCotis said the system is looking in the northern area of the county. Property is being currently evaluated that is east of Burch Elementary and Tyrone Elementary schools.

“With the way that Tyrone’s growing, we expect that will be our next location for a school.”
