District Science Teacher of the Year

Carla Zonneveld

The Georgia Science Teachers Association has selected Carla Zonneveld, a fifth grade teacher at Crabapple Lane Elementary, as the Elementary School Science Teacher of the Year for GSTA District 5 for the year 2006.

Carla Zonneveld has developed an exciting, inquiry-based science classroom for all of her students. They are challenged with solving problems through hands-on activities and demonstrate their knowledge and scientific skills in a variety of projects. Zonneveld has received numerous awards and honors including, Crabapple Lane Teacher of the Year, Walmart Teacher of the Year, state finalist for Presidential Award for Elementary Mathematics and Science Teachers, Fayette Education Association Mini-grant recipient and serves the school system as the fifth grade science trainer for the New Teacher Induction Program and redelivery of the new Georgia Performance Standards.

Each year GSTA recognizes excellence in science teaching through the Science Teacher of the Year Awards and Recognition Program. The Science Teacher of the Year Award recognizes ongoing excellence in the teaching of science and commitment to its improvement.

The District Science Teachers of the Year were honored at a special awards reception and program on Feb. 18 at the Columbus Ironworks following the Annual GSTA Conference.
