Play ball. Soccer, that is. If approved by the City Council, a March 7 recommendation by Fairburn Planning & Zoning commissioners will put a 48,000 square-foot indoor soccer complex on Oakley Industrial Boulevard near Ga. Highway 74.

To be located on Oakley between Hwy. 74 and Bohannon Road, the four-acre site will include two 80-foot by 180-foot soccer fields, a 50-foot by 80-foot training field, concession area and restrooms. Designed primarily for play rather than spectating, the complex will have bleacher some accommodations, according to facility owners Score Indoor Sports. The interior will be outfitted with high illumination lighting and the newest generation Astroturf.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to bring this facility to Fairburn,” said Peachtree City’s Score Indoor Sports co-owner Sam Black. “In doing our research we found that Atlanta is one of the last truly underserved markets in terms of indoor sports. And in doing our search for property this turned out to be the ideal location to draw participants from the entire Southern Crescent of Atlanta. We expect to be an amenity for the community.

Planning & Zoning Coordinator Gail Denman said the city had received inquiries about the possibility of commercial recreational being located in the area. Though in proximity to large warehouse facilities further down Oakley, Denman said council members adopted an ordinance that permitted commercial recreational uses for the area where the soccer complex would be located.

“We thought things like bowling alleys or sports arenas were best suited in this part of the district,” she said. “The idea of something like this came up a couple of years ago and that’s why we thought about amending the industrial zoning to include that.”
