Lisa Stone could not have been happier. As General Manager of the new Hampton Inn at Ga. Highway 74 and Oakley Industrial Boulevard, Stone told Fairburn Planning & Zoning commissioners she was ecstatic to be annexed into the city.

Commissioners voted unanimously to recommend annexation of the 97-room hotel.

Prior to the vote, City Administrator Jim Williams told commissioners annexation of the site, located behind Dunkin Donuts on Hwy. 74, was in keeping with the city council’s annexation policy that would bring appropriate commercial and industrial concerns into the city.

The hotel sits on a 2.3-acre site. Williams said the owner of the hotel was favorably inclined to annexation, anticipating lower taxes and better fire and police service.

“It’s a win-win situation for Hampton and the city,” Williams said. “We’re expecting that taxes will be less within the city than in the incorporated area, but more importantly, the fire and police service will be right here. I think everybody in business with a hotel, motel or restaurant really needs to have good, quick police and fire access.

Addressing commissioners, Stone told commissioners her hotel would benefit from being included inside Fairburn city limits.

“We’re ecstatic to be added to Fairburn if you guys will have us,” said Stone. “We’ll benefit from this. We got a quicker response than when we call Fulton, so we want to be in the city.”

Williams said the annexation will bring the final piece of commercial property on the northeast corner of Hwy. 74 and Oakley into the city. Fairburn recently annexed a 1.2-acre tract immediately south of Hampton Inn. Situated between the hotel and Oakley, the building now under construction will house several small retail businesses.

The recommendation will go before the city council march 27, Williams said.
